People that think a simple security system yard sign is enough to protect their home from break-ins are in for a rude awakening.
These people believe that if a burglar sees the yard sign about the home being protected, they’ll leave it alone and go do their dirty work somewhere else.
That’s not how it happens in real life.
Researchers affiliated with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte found that yard signs and window stickers don’t stop crime, although they may be slightly effective with “spur of the moment” crime.
And let’s look to insurance companies. Not one of them offer a discount for having a security system yard sign or window sticker only.
All of them require a monitored home security alarm system to qualify for homeowner’s insurance discounts.
We can turn to the police for their view of yard signs as a deterrent to home break-ins. Here’s that the police department in San Jose, California has to say:
“Many individuals have alarm systems but do not arm them because it is inconvenient. Many burglars know this and will not be deterred by a window sticker or sign indicating that the home has an alarm system.“
If yard signs and window stickers alone were such an effective deterrent to home break-ins in Texas, don’t you think Amazon would sell them for more than $20?
The evidence is clear. Yard signs and window stickers aren’t adequate home protection. Get an alarm system.
